NBA Is Better, and I Am Right

Many people will agree with this statement… “College basketball is better than the National Basketball Association.” I am probably in the minority who does not agree with it. I am a much bigger fan of the NBA and can name the starting five of most of the teams in the league while the NCAA struggles to capture my attention. I have realized, however, a key to why people don’t like the NBA. The regular season means nothing, especially for the good teams. A perfect example is last night. The Detroit Pistons somehow lost to the Philidelphia 76ers at home. If this was a college game, people would be all over this, and analysts would be going off on how the Pistons don’t have what it takes. Obviously, that’s not how it works in the NBA. I have finally conceded that the regular season in the NBA is obviously not as exciting as in the NCAA. Okay, fine. That being said, it is time for the first edition of “Scanting.” That’s right, it means “Scott Ranting.”
IT’S BETTER BASKETBALL! I watch professional sports to watch incredible athletes do things that I can only dream of. The NBA has some of the greatest athletes in the world. Why don’t we watch college baseball? Well, for starters it isn’t on TV for the most part, but my point is that the MLB is simply better baseball. I can watch college players play great basketball at the local recreation facility. I’m sorry, I don’t buy into the idea that college hoops players supposedly playing better defense. It is a lot easier when you can sit on defense for 20 seconds while the offense decides what to do. I will give it up that there is more passion in the arenas of the college teams. Still, you know what? I don’t care, yea that’s it I guess. The NBA is able to show me some good basketball. College allows me to watch people hit 3 pointers that I could hit consistently and people pass it around for 30 seconds. One play doesn’t give you a good shot? Try a different one. The next play didn’t work? Well, let us try one more and see if we can still get a shot off before the buzzer. Talk about a boring game! Those are my main two problems: 3 point arc needs to back up and the shot clock is too long.
Lastly, I’ll say that the NCAA Tournament is awesome. There’s nothing like it in sports. The excitement is so unique and incredible, I can’t say anything bad about the next 4 or 5 weeks of college basketball. I love it, and I wish every sport was that exciting. Still, the sport itself is not as interesting as the NBA. College Basketball wins for this month, but any other time, I will choose my NBA. It’s as simple as this for me. Will I watch a random Pac-10 game say Stanford vs. Washington State? Or, will I watch a game of similar magnitude, in terms of my involvement with the teams, between Denver and Portland? If your answer is the Denver/Portland game then you are correct because you agree with me, and I am always right! At least that’s what people tell me.

– Spoken like a typical fan who has never played competitive basketball and can’t appreciate the true beauty of the sport. Sure it’s exciting to watch some ridiculously athletic guy do things nobody else can, but this is no way equals “better basketball.” This is anti-better basketball. What a real fan of the SPORT of basketball wants to see is a TEAM of five guys on floor operating and executing as a single unit on both ends of the floor. Basically, I totally disagree with you.

I get to see a TEAM of five guys on the floor when I watch the Pistons. I see that for the Spurs as well. There is plenty of teams out there in the NBA. Nobody glorifies the good teams, just the Kobes and Lebrons.
I understand what you’re saying. In my post, my point was that college basketball can be very boring at times when compared to the NBA. It is playoff time now, and we can see the real teams win and compete against each other.
